Top 5 Best and Safest Lipo Chargers – 2017

Lipo chargers are essential for anyone entering the hobby. They vary widely in price and quality. Safety is a huge issue with lipos, therefore we recommend everyone purchases a charger of reputable quality.

iCharger 4010 Duo 2000W(!)

This is the best it gets when it comes to lipo chargers. The iCharger 4010 has a whole of features essential if you are big into this hobby. Firstly it has a dual output, so it is possible to charge 2 different batteries at once. Although we doubt you will be charging only 2 batteries with this machine! This charger does not take safety light. Indeed, it has automatic temperature cut offs for both internal and external thermometers, as well a cell count check feature to ensure the number of cells matches the charge cycle selected. The power capability of this machine is tremendous, it can push over 70A at 2000W. The iCharger 4010 Duo is not cheap, but you get what you pay for; and it is a must have if you are a professional or just really keen!

iSDT SC-608 150W

iSDT were unheard of until late 2016, when they released the SC-608. This charger is perfect if you plan on charging in the field. As it is compact and no nonsense. The input plug is XT60, a must have if you are running the charger off a larger LiPo battery (the 20000mAh 6S Multistar from HK is popular for this purpose). The output plug is also XT60, so hooking up a parallel board is a walk in the park without the need for those awful 4mm bullet connectors .The size is another great advantage, its small enough to chuck into your flight bag and forget about it. Just because it is small does not mean it lacks features, in fact it has all the functions available of a larger charger such as support for all the regular cells types, including LiHV packs. At $50 it’s a great deal as a field charger. Also check out its larger sibling the Q6 Plus, which is similar sized but packs double the power! Be sure to purchase the English language version.

iSDT SC-620 500W

This is yet another great charger from iSDT. This charger is a more capable version of the aforementioned SC-608 150W, yet it still maintains the great price. Some features include a 2.4” IPS display (great for looking at wider viewing angles as well in daylight), a USB port to charge your phone at the field as well as an upgrade port to allow the user to upgrade the firmware themselves. This is a great feature as it enables the company to continue to provide upgrades to the charger to the end user, such as bug fixes and maybe even more features. Be sure to purchase the English language version.

Turnigy Accucel-6 80W

The Accucel-8 is a great budget option if you are just entering the hobby. Its made by hobbyking and hosts all the features you need but still has the cheap price. Importantly it can charge LiHV batteries, which is important if you are looking to push the performance envelope.  However it still has the ancient 4 button and dot matrix display for control over the charging features, which is very slow compared to other options on the list which use rotary encoders and IPS displays. That being said for the price ($26.40) it is the best option on the market.

Turnigy Reaktor 250W

This is another great budget option from HobbyKing. However the Reaktor has a number of additional features, and it is the charger we currently use at DroneInsider! Firstly it has battery memories. So you can preset settings for your packs, making it much quicker to charge away. In addition you can use it to power a hot wire cutter for cutting flying wings out of foam core. We think this is a pretty niche use but it’s nice to have anyway. Final feature is the fact it can perform charge and discharge cycles. This is good for breaking in new batteries as well as testing older ones whose performance you suspect has decreased.

  1. The speed of the charging rate is important. How long does iCharger 4010 Duo 2000W charge? Is the cycle high?
