Top 5 Best Consumer Drones – 2017

DJI Mavic Pro

The DJI Mavic pro is a go anywhere, brilliant all round AP drone. It folds nicely, is highly accessible and is highly robust. It shoots 4K video at 30FPS and 12-megapixel photos with DNG support. The camera is more than good enough for most consumer AP needs beating out  the camera on every other drone in its class except the Phantom 4 Pro and inspire. However, this is to be expected considering how much more expense they are. All in all a great all round drone at a reasonable price with over 4 miles of range and over 21 minutes of flight time as well as  a top speed of 40MPH.

DJI Inspire 2

On the other end of the spectrum we have the DJI inspire 2. This builds on the heavy success of the orginal DJI inspire, which found a great market niche for high end consumers and professionals alike. The high quality camera and ease of use has revolutionised Cinematography in the last 3 years. The Inspire 2 costs roughly $6,000 and is intended for people who want the absolute best aerial photography/cinematography tool on the market. The  X5S camera, can shoot RAW 4K video at 60FPS, 12-bit RAW 5.2K video at 30FPS, and if you like Apple Prores, there’s even Prores 4444 XQ support. Though it costs a pretty penny, it is worth it for the footage that it churns out. It is alwasy worth pointing out that the Inspire 1 V2 is still a highly capable drone at half the cost so that may be a better option.

DJI Phantom 4 PRO

The DJI phantom series has become a staple of the drone market. The Original phantom arguable created the consumer drone market, by making high quality, easy to fly and mostly safe drones available to the average consumer. DJI has steadily built on its original phantom heritage improving each iteration exponentially. Though the Phantom 4 has an exceptional camera the big feature is the added 3D cameras and new computer hardware for mapping out environments in three dimensional space. This is what allows it to avoid obstacles and maneuver around them. Making the phantom series safer and more user friendly than ever.

Yuneec Typhoon H

Yuneec are the other big competitor to DJI. They are more recent to the drone market. However over the last two years they have designed and created some highly capable drones and are fast making a name for themselves. Unlike the DJIs this is a hexacoptor, meaning it can take bigger pay loads, and as high in built failsafe for a prop chuck, esc or motor failure. All in all the Yuneec is an impressive drone is great optics and a similar 3D mapping technology to the Phantom 4, the larger size and slightly more sophisticated UI means it fills the market gap between the Phantom 4 and the Inspire series. Their Typhoon is a high end hex copter designed for (once again) the Prosumer market, as it is equipped with a GCO3+, a 12MP, 4K and 3 axis stabilised camera.

Yuneec Q500 4K

This is Yuneec’s response to the DJI Phantom series. As it is only a Quadcopter it is markedly cheaper than the Yuneec Typhoon H. As the name implies, it shoots 4K video just like the Phantom 3, 4, Inspire and Solo. It has some unique features For example, it comes with two batteries and a hand mount that allows you to take the camera (and gimbal) off the quadcopter to use it as a mini handheld stabilized camera system.  At $1300, it’s definitely a good price for what you’re getting, especially compared to the other quadcopters on this list, this is due in part to the fact that Yuneec is still relatively unheard of as a company. The flip side of this however is that there is very little information on the quad still and it has very few third party accessories. Our Biggest issues with this quad is the Radio is (in our opinion) poorly designed and comes with a weak screen, however we guess this is due to the competitive price point.
