The GoPro is the best action cam out there. Period. GoPro has been well known now for producing the best cameras out there period. This is because they simply produce the best picture quality available, as well as are far stronger than any other camera on the market. We at Drone Insider have had our Hero 3+ Black since December 2013 and it is still going strong, despite the fact the screen and wifi no longer works! One sneaky tip is to buy the Best Buy protection package, for only $60 you get virtually unlimited replacements for your GoPro, not matter how many times you crash.
The Session is GoPro’s latest offering, it features a much smaller form factor for also a reduced price. When it initially came out we were not too impressed by its slightly worse image quality than the Hero 4 Silver, however when the price dropped, it because an excellent offer. Especially if you want a light option for your quad. At Drone Insider we use ours for our smaller 180 quads. One quad well equipped to protect the Session is the Shendrones Corgi. The beauty is of the session is it’s light weight and ruggedness, it is probably one of the best all round action cams for Quads on the market at the moment, especially for FPV racing.
This is the so called GoPro killer! With video quality which is comparable to the Gopro 3 hero, but for only $75. It features the Ambarella A7LS Image Processor meaning it can take 16.0MP stills with its Sony Exmor R BSI CMOS image sensor, with 155°wide angle It is also highly durable with 40m Waterproof Depth when used with a waterproof case and it also has a rigid plastic body to make it shockproof for those bad crashes. It has HD Video Recording Adopted H.264 video decoding, capture in 1080p 60fps, 960P/60,48 fps, 720P/120,60,48 fps and it also has long battery life with its 1010mAh detachable battery. One thing to note is it is slightly thicker (Size: 61 x 22 x 42 mm / 2.4 x 0.87 x 1.65 inch) than a GoPro so some of those custom 3D printed mounts may not work, but other than that it is a truly brilliant quad.
This has come to be known as the Mobius Killer, Runcam first entered the FPV action came game about a year back and since then they have gone from strength to strength! It has richer, sharper and more detailed image quality than the Mobius, and it has High Video Resolutions: 1080p 60fps, 720p 120fps. The beauty of the run came is it has extremely Low Latency: 40ms (720p120fps); 60ms(1080p 60fps) making it usable for FPV flying especially on planes. A key with any FPV camera is its weight and the Runcam is only 50g (1.7oz) with battery. Finally, it also has built-in lens hood for those brutal crashes as well as RF shielding to prevent any noise ruining your Quad copter. Runcam have really come out on top in the FPV game and this action camera is testament to that.
Turnigy 2K HD camera
If you’re looking for an action Camera which can be used for AP as well as FPV racing, than this is the camera for you. Again it is only a fraction of the price of a GoPro, yet it still packs a punch. The Turnigy 2K has six different video resolutions to chose from and can record in 2K (2560×1440) at 30 frames per second. This version also allows recording at 60fps in full HD (1080p) and HD (720p). It is also nice and light weighing in at only 45g as well as being small and compact with a size of 41x25x59.5mm. This is a good camera however, the biggest issue we have with it is the high FOV 170 degrees which many argue is simply too high for AP work.
